Task - 7 Evaluation

My final product, the comic strip, didn't turn out as good as I wanted. I originally planned for it to be ten pages long but I had to shorten it to five due to time constraints, I also wanted to ink it with a fine-liner but again, I didn't have the time to do so. I had to shorten it because proportions when drawing people takes time to get right sometimes, in this case some of the angles I decided to draw my characters from made it difficult but if I had changed those it would've meant moving all of the panels around to fit the new angle.

As just a pencil drawing the comic's first few pages look great but you can see in the last two pages that I had to rush it. The first two pages are the best of the five that I made, I spent more time on those than I did on any of the other pages. The line art in most of the pages is great, the last page however, doesn't look as appealing.

The story isn't as fun and interesting as it would have been if I didn't have to cut it short, but it still has a few fun jokes in the dialogue and a few funny moments that occur in the comic. I think the story would've been better if I had the time to make the story as long as I'd planned. Time with this project was a huge problem as I had to focus on other units just as much as this one, sometimes more.

Overall the comic could have been better but given the time I had to make it, but given the quality of most of the pages I think the comic came out rather well.  If I were to make this again I would do as much as I could to make it as long as I originally wanted as well as inking the pages.

Task - 6 Presentation

Task - 5 Production

Week 1 - I have begun to read through a few comics for my research and ideas generation for my own comic strip; those comics being Deadpool: The Complete Collection, Bakuman, Scott Pilgrim and World War Hulk.

Each of the comics I'm reading has a different art style and unique story so each one of them has their own contribution to my own ideas generation.

Week 2 - I have tried my own hand at some of the art styles in the comics I've read. I have finish two small pieces based on the Deadpool comic's style. I plan to finish at least one based on the Bakuman manga's art style.

Week 3 - I've finished a piece based on the Bakuman art style and I am close to finishing one based on the style of Scott Pilgrim, for which I will be focusing on the character art. If I finish it this week I will be able to think about which genre I should go with for this project.

Week 4 - I have finished my piece based on Scott Pilgrim and therefore; the research section for this unit is done. I am creating a spider diagram of different genres so that I can more easily decide on what I can do with a story of each genre then choose a genre for my story.

Week 5 - I have decided to make a slice-of-life comedy story for my comic, the story with be made for a more mature audience that will understand the plot and some of the jokes I slip into the dialogue. I will be pitching this story idea next week and get confirmation that this idea is ok to use. I have also made a short synopsis which will also be apart of my planning stage of this unit.

Week 6 - I have made a presentation displaying some of the comics I've researched to better explain how I will be making my comic in my pitch (what style the art will be, etc.). I have also made a slightly more detailed version of my synopsis for the comic's story, this will help me better explain the plot and characters in the pitch presentation. I will do the pitch at the end of the week and next week (if I am given the OK with this idea) I will begin my planning stage; which will involve the draft, the synopsis is also apart of this planning stage.

Week 7 - I have begun the draft, just quick sketches to plan out where the panels will be placed on each page and what will be in each of those panels (character positions, dialogue, etc.). I have finished the first page and I am about to start the second, I have decided to go with a relatively simple art style; somewhat similar to a style seen in superhero comics but somewhat simpler and less detailed. This will allow me to more easily finish the work for this unit in time.

Week 8 - I have finished two more page drafts, but after looking at my schedule again I have realized that I need to shorten the story if I want to finish it in time. I'm not a fast worker when it comes to art so I might need to half the length of the overall story. I have also created a schedule which I've uploaded to the blog for this unit, I will also upload a second version of the schedule if anything changes like a task taking longer than expected. I have also worked out how much this work would cost using a combination of how much the materials I'm using costs and how much I would expect to be paid for my work per hour.

Week 9 - I have quickly sketched the two final page drafts, I wanted this story to be longer but I don't think I have enough time to do that. I'm not as happy with this shortened version of my story, I feel it could've been much better if I had the time for at least ten pages rather than five. I'm going to start finalizing the pages now and hopefully I won't take too long to do this.

Week 10 - I only managed to finish a couple panels of the first page last week so I had to spend some of this week working on it too, keeping in mind that I do have other units and projects to work on so I can't dedicate all of my time to this one in particular. I have started working on the second page and plan to have this one finished by the middle of next week at the most.

Week 11 - I took longer than I expected but the second page is done nonetheless. some of the panels I've drawn are more complicated to draw than some people might think, this means that I have to spend longer than expected on two or three panels per page. I am going to start the third page at the start of next week.

Week 12 - I Have finished the third page, his one took less time to draw but I think that it looks a bit more rushed than the other two. I did spend less time focusing on detail here as I've noticed I am nearing the deadline and two of the five pages aren't finished, this means I may end up having to rush them both, which is rather disappointing for me.

Week 13 - I have finished the last two pages after rushing through them, they don't look anywhere near as good as the pages before them, if I had the time I would go back and improve them. I will have to present and evaluate my work next week because I took longer with the actual production of the comic than I expected.

Week 14 - I have finished my presentation and evaluated my final product in the sketchbook I presented my work in. I was hoping this project would go better as this was the only unit where I actually felt like I had full creative freedom from start to finish.
